How to Create Flashcards in Notion: Easy & Quick Guide (2024)

Want to build your own flashcards in Notion?

Flashcards are an incredibly effective way to memorize and learn new information. With Notion, flashcards can be easily organized by topic or difficulty, making them convenient tools for learners. Whether used for studying vocabulary, historical dates, or scientific concepts, Notion can create versatile flashcards to help you master new information.

In this article, we will walk you through a step-by-step guide on how to build a simple flashcard system. Let’s open your Notion workspace and follow us to learn the quickest and simplest way to create flashcards!

Step 1: Consider your flashcard learning objectives

The first and most important step is to consider what you will use the flashcards for. This initial step is crucial because it sets the base for how you will create and organize your flashcards.

For example, are these cards intended for studying languages, requiring vocabulary and grammar points, or for history, where you need to remember dates, events, and key figures? Alternatively, if you study science, engineering, and math, you might want your flashcards to include concepts, formulas, theorems, diagrams, problems, and equations.

By clearly identifying the subject matter, you can tailor your flashcards to be the most effective study tool for your specific needs.

Step 2: Create the Flashcard Database

The best way to create flashcards in Notion is to use a Gallery or Board view for an organized and visually appealing presentation of the learning cards.

  • Gallery view: where you can easily see each flashcard with an image or icon, which helps improve study retention.
  • Board view: where you can categorize and move flashcards between different stages, enhancing your study process and progress tracking.

In either case, type /board for board view or /gallery for gallery view, then click to create a new database called “Flashcards”. We will hide the database title just so that it looks cleaner here.

Step 3: Configure the Card Properties (Back of the Card)

Depending on the subject, your flashcards might contain different components. In this case, we will keep the card simple with the following setup for

  • Card Title: the concept or the word you want to remember
  • Cover Photos: Images and illustrations are optional
  • Status: choose the status property, where you can set your learning status, e.g. “To Learn, Need Review, and Learned”
  • Answer: choose the text property, where you can write down the answer, explanation, and further examples.
  • Show Answer Box: choose the formula property; once you tick this checkbox, the answer will be displayed at the front of the card. This formula will be relatively simple and is a great starting point for learning how to use formulas. Name it "Show Answer Formula", then edit it. Create an if statement: if(show == true, answer, ""). This means if the "Show" checkbox is checked, then show the answer; if not, show nothing.

Step 4: Display your Flashcards (Front Of The Card)

The front of your flashcard should be kept simple and uncluttered to avoid distractions. This means using minimal text and clear, concise language. Keeping the design straightforward and focusing on the main idea or question will ensure that the key information is easily recognizable.

Step 5: Use and Organize Flashcards

There are many ways to organize your flashcards, whether by subject, sub-topics or decks. Within a deck, you can even further categorize the flashcards by specific topics or chapters. This detailed and structured approach helps maintain an organized learning system.
