Notion's Multi-Source Databases Explained! | Full Guide 2025

Notion introduced multi‑source databases. Previously, each database contained a single data source. Now a database can house several sources, each with its own schema and pages. This adds a higher‑level container for organizing related sources together while keeping views scoped to a single source.

What you can and can’t do

You can place multiple sources such as Tasks, Projects, and Contacts inside one database and create views for each source. You can also relate items across sources and even link or move existing sources into the new database.

You cannot combine multiple sources into a single view. A data source view still displays one source at a time. That means a “master calendar” that merges separate calendar sources is still out of scope.

Database‑level sharing can apply across sources, but a linked view respects the permissions of its original source. Keep this in mind when embedding views elsewhere.

How to set up a multi‑source database

  1. Create a database and add your first source, for example Tasks.
  2. Use the plus button to add another source, such as Projects.
  3. Create views for each source. Switch layouts like table or gallery as needed.

When it makes sense

Multi‑source databases can help when several related sources need to live together for governance or sharing, or when you want a single entry point to your entire datasource system.

When to avoid it

For most setups, single‑source databases remain clearer. Views can become cluttered when many sources live together. Linked views and relations are often easier to understand when each source has its own database page. If you prioritize simplicity and discoverability, keep sources separate!

Multi‑source databases are powerful but not mandatory. Use them intentionally when they reduce friction. Otherwise, a clean single‑source architecture will keep your workspace easier to navigate and maintain. Watch the video below for a video guide!
